Inspired by prehistoric cave paintings, this decorative ceramic bowl, or objet d’art, was created by the French ceramic artist André Guiron, who signed his work Sala.
The hand-painted decoration is rich in detail, depicting a herd of deer running across a rocky landscape, alongside hunting prehistoric figures, a bison, a handprint and symbolic cave markings.
The bowl itself is sculptural in form. Its organic shape and heavily textured exterior are designed to resemble natural stone. The reverse is finished with fossil-like shell impressions, reinforcing the impression of an ancient stone object shaped by time.
Finished in warm shades of black, brown and ochre, the bowl beautifully combines ceramic craftsmanship with artistic storytelling.
This beautiful example of 1960s French studio pottery is signed Sala on the front and remains in mint condition.
