This memorial statue is an example of traditional African metalwork from the Benin Kingdom, present-day Nigeria, known for its historic bronze and brass sculptures made using the lost wax method.
The statue represents a wild boar, which is visited by birds. The boar in this figure represents earthiness and the birds are the messengers between worlds. It could therefore symbolize the connection between the earth and the spiritual world.
The statue is véry decorative and probably dates from the 1940s – 50s.
In original condition with a patina that matches its age.
